I just wanted to give a quick shout out to Sarah and Andy! Their adoption adventure is picking up steam as they head to Khazakstan in about a week to meet and pick up their child or children! Check out their blog for all the details. I'm very happy to see them embark on such an amazing journey! We all look forward to meeting the newest addition(s) to the Snyder family!
Also, Congratulations to all those who participated in the Racine and Chisago Lakes Tri's recently: Becca, Ed, Matt, Katie, Jesse, Pete, Jessica, Petra, Steph....and many, many more! I know I'm missing someone!

Oh, it's gonna hurt...
This week was a roller coaster - at work, in my personal life and in training. I definitely had some major peaks and valleys in each of these areas. Ultimately though, it's just another week. We all seem to manage to get through it one way or another. The road to success and achievement is not always paved in gold. Quite often it's filled with tears, tough lessons and moments of extreme doubt. And, when you are training for an Ironman, the road is sometimes covered in gravel.
I'm not sure if it's the humidity or the stress, but I couldn't manage to drag myself out of bed this week. Each time the alarm went off, I found some reason to skip or postpone my workout. Usually, I'm pretty good about crawling out of bed to get in a swim or a run knowing the reward may be an evening free to do as I please. This week was different.
Monday
Somehow I motivated myself to get in the pool and swim in the evening. There was no class and no scheduled workout. Swimming can sometimes be a total drag without these motivating factors. Luckily for me, my good friend and training buddy, Ed, was also swimming. Even though you can't talk while swimming, the company is always nice.
Tuesday
I was all set to get out of bed and do my long run before work. The alarm went off and I stayed put. I did do my long run that evening. I ran about 11.5 miles around Lake Monona. Given my recent decrease in running volume, I was surprised to have a strong run. I didn't hate it, my legs felt good and it really released the stress of the day. I followed up my run with an ice cold beer and some chocolate...oh and watching my friends Sean and Jess play Ultimate Frisbee.
Wednesday
I was again lucky enough to be able to train with Ed. We went out for the standard SW Madison bike ride - the Paoli Loop. We had a great ride. We chatted the whole way, smashed the hills and really relished the flats. It was a beautiful evening in Madison. After the ride, I was lucky to spend a few hours with some of my co-workers enjoying food and beverages at the Great Dane in Fitchburg.
Thursday
This was a BAD day. I skipped my morning swim...and fully intended to run in the evening with the Fleet Feet running group. I ended up staying a bit later at work than intended...and just felt like relaxing and not running. So, I didn't run. Wow - I skipped two workouts in one day. This was a tough day all around. Nothing seemed to be going right. Luckily, there's always a new day.
Friday
I went to Masters Swim and had a really strong workout. Afterwards, I met my friend Petra for breakfast. We had some great girl talk and enjoyed some tea and coffee. Petra just completed her first half Ironman. She did a phenomonal job - I'm very proud of her. She's a strong athlete and good friend. After breakfast, I was very fortunate to spend several hours with my Mom and Brother Mike in Milwaukee. We enjoyed lunch and Margaritas at Tumbleweed and followed it up with some good conversation. I headed back to Madison and ended up redecorating my entire room with my friend Dana.
Saturday
I got up at a reasonable hour and set out for another long run. The morning started out cool, but as soon as the sun came out the humidity skyrocketed! Again though, I was pleasantly surprised by my run. I was clocking some fast miles and feeling fairly comfortable doing so. I ended up running just over 11 miles in about 1:30. Following the run, I had a marathon day of attending a baby shower for my friend Jessica and then heading back to Milwaukee for my grandparents 25th anniversary party.
Sunday
The alarm went off at 5:05am...that's right...5:05am on a Sunday. (Yes, I'm crazy!)
I was meeting up with my friends Matt and Steve to ride 2 loops of the Ironman course at 6am in Verona. This was going to be an epic ride - 80 hilly miles and a test of our fitness. The first loop was great - we didn't really stop at all, rode fairly comfortably and enjoyed the cool morning air.
Before beginning the 2nd loop, we stopped back at the cars to refuel and attend to some other necessities. This included a reapplication of Chamois Butter by Steve and Matt. For those of you who don't know, Chamois (pronounced Shammy) Butter is a cream that eases the rubbing of some private parts with the saddle. No one ever said triathlon was glamorous. We set out for the 2nd loop as the humidity and the heat was really starting to bear down on us. This go around definitely felt tougher. We managed to make it into Mt Horeb to refuel. Matt's dad even met us with Lemonade and Cookies.
After refueling, we set out to complete the loop. It wasn't easy. I definitely had moments where I realized how much Ironman Sunday was going to hurt...and how difficult this course really was. How am I going to do this, I thought. I'm not sure how, but you just keep going no matter how tough it gets. The same is true with life. I had a tough week, but somehow you just keep moving forward hoping for the best.
We cruised back into Verona where Matt crashed. Well, crash is a strong word. Matt forgot to unclip his feet from his pedals and experienced the slow motion, oh-so-embarrassing fall in a major intersection in Verona. That was really the most entertaining part of the entire 5 hours we spent riding.
Sunday (Part 2)
The second part of my Sunday was great. I came home, took a quick shower and went to pick-up our new NE Sales Rep - Jon. Jon is training at Saris in Madison for about a month. I thought I would be a good hostess and show him a little of Madison. We grabbed brunch at the infamous Pancake Cafe. This was followed by a trip to Staples (very exciting). Like any good hostess, I put Jon to work and had him carry a case of wine for me. We capped off the afternoon with an icy cold drink from Starbucks. It was a really enjoyable afternoon.
After dropping Jon off, I headed straight over to Ed's for an Ironman BBQ. The whole gang was there - Becca, Jessica, Pete, Steve, Ed, Matt, Katie...plus the families, Jim and Breanne. The BBQ was great - tasty food and fun stories! We watched the Ironman video that Steve is preparing for all of us and it was great! He really has outdone himself! I feel so lucky to be part of such a great group of people.
Watching the video really reminded me of the journey that I am on right now. No matter what is going on in my life, Ironman was a commitment I made nearly 1 year ago and it's something that I have to see through! Afterall, it's now only 6 weeks away.
This week's lesson
This week's lesson didn't come out of training, but out of life. No matter how tough things get, you keep pushing forward because that's all you can really do. Who wants to go backwards?
Next Saturday I head to Michigan for my final race before Ironman. I am racing the Steelhead 70.3 Triathlon. For those of you unfamiliar with triathlon distances, this is a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run (a Half Ironman). I am travelling and participating with my friend Amanda. It should be a great race and further help me dial in my nutrition for Ironman.
Stay Tuned for next week's race report..and check out my pictures! I've added some new ones from this weekend!

Fun with Donovan
I said I'd post if anything interesting happens on my Sunday ride...and we had a few interesting incidents!
My friend and fellow Ironman trainee, Steve Donovan, and I got together to ride for 4 hours on a GORGEOUS July morning. We set out to do one of the Bombay Bicycle Routes - Rock of Gibraltar. We headed North, enjoying the weather and the quiet country roads. About 20 miles into the ride, Steve announces 'I've lost the map'! Awesome! We were definitely winging it at that point, but both relied on the fact that we had cell phones if we got totally lost.
About 2 hours into the ride, we arrived in Prairie du Sac. We attempted to find a gas station and grab a map, but weren't having any luck. We knew if we jumped back on 188, we'd hit Wollersheim Winery.
Wollersheim is a beautiful little winery in Western Wisconsin. It just so happens that it was opening in about 10 minutes. It was a unanimous vote to stop in and enjoy a glass of fine wine mid-ride. This is probably not a conventional training method, but we both needed the break.
After Wollersheim, we finished out our ride. It was pretty uneventful from that point forward. A lot of riding, hill climbing and enjoying the day. Once we arrived back at Fleet Feet, we ran for about 15 minutes to cap off our day of training.
6 weeks, 6 days to IM WI 2007
Congrats to all those who rocked at the Racine Half Ironman. Wow!

7 weeks and counting...
I wasn't sure what to write about this week. I haven't had any significant milestones in my training. I'm feeling generally unmotivated to train. I have no funny stories of crashing my bike or having a fish jump next to me in a lake. This week was rather unremarkable. The only thing that really hit me this week was how fast the next 7 weeks are going to go. I started running through the 'weekends' leading up to Ironman.
July 28-29: Baby Shower, 25th Anniversary Party, Ironman BBQ
August 4-5: Steelhead Half Ironman in Michigan - Last race before IM
August 11-12: Trek World, Z4 Party, Big Training!
August 18-19: My dear friends - Sean and Jess - are finally tying the knot!
August 25-26: Nothing yet....but most likely a weekend of big training!
September 1-2: My 29th Birthday
September 8-9: IRONMAN WI
When I look at it like that, I start to panic a little bit. It is close! Closer than I think....I still need to get my running and bike volume up and maintain my swimming. I need to dial in my nutrition plan. And I need to make peace with the fact that anything can happen on that day and I just have to learn to adapt. I have to accept the fact that I just might not finish. Something could happen that would cause me not to cross that line.
But then, I have the other moments. When a workout gets tough or I don't feel motivated to continue, I think about what my final mile is going to be like at Ironman. I think about seeing my parents as I turn onto MLK BLVD. I think about Dana, Jim and Isabelle watching me come up State Street. I think about Darla being there to cheer me in. I think about how the crowd is going to be loud and crazy...and the lights will be bright. And I'm not sure if I'll stop short of the finish and look at it knowing that I've done it and I'm about to achieve something I never thought I could. Maybe my adrenaline will kick in and I'll go flying across that line with the crowd blurring by me...I don't know what that day will bring, but I do know it grows closer and closer each day.
I have one more challenging training day this week. I'm riding for 4 hours with my friend Steve tomorrow. Following the ride, we are running for 30 minutes. It's a long one, but one we need to get under our belts. I'll post if anything interesting happens on our ride!
Until next week...

Longest Swim Yet!
As predicted, the week started out fairly rough after a 6 day break from training. My first bike of the week was rocky and same with the first swim, but by Wednesday I was back into the swing of things.
Today was another Epic Day for me, except this time it was in the water! I went up to Devil's Lake (near Baraboo, WI) with my swim class and the Madison MultiSport Team to swim across the lake and back. I never expected this was something I could or would want to do at this Lake. I've been coming here since I was a kid and never imagined I would swim across the lake.
At 7am we met up at Barriques in Middleton and headed up to Devil's Lake. I rode up with my swim coach - Dave. Dave is excellent. He's such a great motivator and has been one of the keys to my swimming success. Dave really has done a phenomenal job of taking a non-swimmer and turning me into a swimmer.
Once up at Devil's Lake, I got into my wetsuit and applied LOTS of Body Glide to my neck. I always get a bad burn from the suit if I don't do this. I even asked Dave to carry the Body Glide, just in case...
Dave and Cindi set out in kayaks while the rest of us got in the water and started swimming for the boathouse on the North Shore. The boathouse is large, so it was really easy to sight. It always seemed to get closer and closer, but was still so far away. I felt strong swimming across the lake. I didn't stop except once or twice to sight the boathouse. It was a little choppy on the way out, but not too bad. I was pleased to swim in a nice straight line and arrive at the boathouse 37 minutes later with the boys. Eric, Joost, Chet and I arrived all within a minute or so of each other. It was 1.25 miles to the boathouse.
After a few minutes of rest, we continued back towards the south shore. This time we were sighting on a rocky spot on the bluffs. This was a bit more challenging, because once we got closer you couldn't see the bluff. I was having a hard time picking out the shelter on shore and ended up having to stop completely and re-orient myself. I ended up having to make a sharp left turn into shore. I was swimming slightly off course. I'm not sure how much extra I swam, but the 2.5 mile swim took me 1 hour 17 minutes. I felt great about that! And, I couldn't believe that I just swam (with the fishies and all) across Devil's Lake and back.
Despite being focused on the swim, it was a very peaceful experience. The sun was shining, the skies were blue, the lake was calm and clean. It was really refreshing!
After the swim, Chet and I set out for a bike ride around the area while the rest of the group went for a run. The bike was punishing. It was quite hilly and we had a few tough climbs. But, we also had a few fun descents as well!
Once back at the park, we got cleaned up and enjoyed some yummy treats that the Madison Multisport group brought up to the lake. Brownies, cherries, tuna salad, chips, watermelon (Thanks Amanda!), etc...
Ironman is now less than 2 months away. I'm struggling a little bit right now to stay motivated. I don't feel as though I'm doing enough volume, but I trust in my coach and know that he's moving me along well. My running has been fairly absent for the last few weeks and I need to get that in gear.
My next race is on August 4th in Michigan. I look forward to racing again and think that will be a good barometer on my preparation for Ironman.
Thanks for reading and keeping up with my IM journey. I look forward to posting the day after the big race and being able to say: I am an Ironman....or Ironwoman :)

Training Hiatus
Finally, the big day has arrived - time to leave for London! Despite being midway through training for the summer, I decided that a quick jaunt across the pond was very necessary.
Not only do I get to see the start of the Tour, but I get to spend 3.5 days enjoying the sights and sounds of London.
London isn't the only thing giving me a break from training. I've also been feeling kinda crummy since Sunday. I opted to skip a swim on Monday, a bike ride on Tuesday and another bike ride today. A week of physical and mental recovery from training will be a good thing for me for the rest of the summer. I am hoping it will prevent me from becoming stale and tired.
Stay tuned for pictures of my UK adventure! Happy 4th of July!
Cheerio!
